  2. Background • Classroom teaching can be enhanced by using TLMs, classroom interactions, and also through improving the teaching style. Govt. provides trainings annually to enhance the capacity of teachers, yet there are deficits in the trainings as they do not consider the specific needs of the teachers. • With three years of experiences in CFSI programme we felt that there was dearth of reading habit among teachers and creative space for them • To address these issues CFSI has started working on two areas - Teacher Capacity Building - Teaching Learning Process • CFSI newsletter is the very effective intervention introduced by CFSI to provide creative space for teachers • The newsletter tries to capture the specific needs of Shorapur teachers. And in this way, the newsletter contributes to the teaching style and thereby, teacher development.

Our experience with newsletter Learning Guarantee State Newsletter-Started in 2005 • It was a plat form for teachers to share their classroom experiences • It had continuous readers for four years and it had brought out various issues • It was a teacher guideline for teacher academic development in North east Karnataka region • It was stopped in the year-2008

Study on Newsletter in 2008 Findings • People wont read articles if the pages are more • People wont read such articles which give suggestions to them • They read more article which have local context and real life experiences • They read articles which are helpful to use in the classroom process • The read article which have simple experiments and activities • They read such articles if it has action research shared by other teachers

Present situation of the newsletter • CFSI has started its own newsletter in August, 2008 • Till now it has brought out 30 issues • This newsletter will have most of the articles written by Shorapur teachers • Every issue will have one or two pages of Urdu articles • It includes content on education theories, classroom experiences, new experiments, TLMs, and teachers achievements and real experiences • It includes more local education related information • Quality of the newsletter has been improved • Three thousand copies to be published every month to meet the needs of the teachers and it has been distributed across the state 350 schools in Shorapur block, all Govt. functionaries (Yadgir), DDPI, DIET, NIYAS, AKSHARA foundation, Migrant labour schools, Deenabandhu, Education Commissioners office, DSERT,

Present situation of the newsletter Actions: • Started giving prizes for the best articles in every issue • BEO of the Shorapur block has taken the responsibility and he is the editor of the newsletter and he writes editorials in every issue • Responsibility of preparing the newsletter is being given to TLCs (in rotation) • Conducted two days writing workshop for Shorapur teachers • Special issue was brought out for the articles written by school children News Letter

Need of the newsletter readers study To see how newsletter can help to make classroom process more effective by creating interest among teachers about education • To get feedback from the readers about the journey of the newsletter (About four years) • To make changes in the newsletter to make it more reader friendly • To see how to improve the content of the articles Specific research questions: • To identify the most used articles from the last three issues • To identify which feature of the newsletter is most interesting for readers • To identify which subject teachers read in the newsletter most and why • To gain insights to make readers friendly content • To identify the teachers who have read the newsletter and used it in the classroom teaching and why

Methodology • Identifying 20 teachers who read newsletter continuously • Recent three issues to be taken for the study • In-depth interview with the teachers who have read newsletter and applied the learning in the classroom • In-depth interview with the teachers who have read the newsletter but not applied the learning in the classroom Future Study • The Role of Newsletter in Teacher Academic Development Process
