  1. ETSI Standardization proposal from CARI Internet of Things, Building Automation & and Sustainable development Gilles Mohn Project Manager , CARI ETSI Workshop on RFID and The Internet Of Things, 3rd and 4th December 2007

  2. Why & who is CARI • Who is CARI • CARI SA is a French Construction & services Limited Company • Independent since 2004 LMBO • Figures 2006: 415 M€ TO / 2400 Employees / 5th position on the market • Based in Nice, dedicated to domestic market. • Dedicated to both private and public markets (PFI). RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  3. Why & who is CARI ? • Why CARI ? • A strategy based on sustainable development values • Development of Economical, Environmental & social aspects • Use of “HQE” referential in design and building processes • Brings competitive advantages in: • Going further than EC & French regulations • developing Energy efficiency/savings for our constructions • increasing comfort for end users • Anticipate on major innovation issues RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  4. ICT in construction: a major issue • What we understand on ICT issue on the construction market: • ICT is the link between energy efficiency and comfort in construction • A simple statement: It is complicated • Construction is the place where technologies convergence take’s place • Internet of things starts in the building (from the sensor/ Actuator to the supervision solution) • A wide range of economical actors (from the plug to the supervision software) • Major ICT actors are wanting to take market share RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  5. ICT in construction: a major issue • The destination of the building determines the range of technology to be used • No real worldwide standards defined • Strong issues of interoperability & between close & open source protocols • Wide range of transport technology: RF, Power Line, BUS, Ethernet, IR • No real ROI focused approach • Difficult for a construction company to make the right choice RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  6. Needs • What we need: • We need to implement cost effective , efficient & evolving BMS • We need clear European standards to be defined: • Taking in account energy optimization • Taking in account comfort optimization • Taking in account environmental rules & regulations evolution • Taking in account building maintenance optimization RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  7. How we try to get answers • BMS market intelligence • Meeting all market actors and evaluating solutions (technical, energy savings & cost/ ROI) • Taking part to R&D collaborative projects as demonstrator • On local competitiveness clusters such as Pole SCS, Capenergies and Mer PACA. • On European projects / FP7 Strep actions: • Supporting INES intelligent Network for Energy Savings CSTB proposal • Supporting REEB special interest group proposal with CSTB proposal RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007

  8. How we try to get answers • Organising conference & exhibition on strategic topics: • In order to get answers from specialists to question we ask, • We organize a conference on “home& building automation” at Agora Einstein on the 6 et 7th of December 07. • Proposing to ETSI & CSTB to work on ICT standards in construction • First step : creating a work group • Then define best practices concerning building/ home automation ICT & Sustainable development RFID and The Internet Of Things, ETSI, December 2007
