Page 1 Properties of Matter What do we already know?BrainPOP Teaser What is gravity? a) What keeps objects in orbit? a) 3) What causes the tides? a)
Page 2 Properties of Matter: Vocabulary Part I 1) volume: is the space that an object takes up -liquid volume is measured in ounces, liters, milliliters, gallons -solids are measured in cubic centimeters, cubic feet 2) mass: the amount of matter in an object (measured in grams) and isn’t changed by gravity 3) matter:anything that has mass and volume 4) weight: how strongly gravity pulls on an object (measured in pounds, ounces, kilograms) 5) State of matter: One of three forms matter can take: solid, liquid or gas Types of Matter: Lesson 1
Page 3 Properties of Matter: Vocabulary Part II 6) Melting point: is the temperature that solids turn into liquid 7) evaporation: is when liquids turn into gas 8) boiling point: is the temperature that liquids turn into gas 9) freezing point: is the temperature that liquids turn into solids ****the melting point and freezing point are typically the same temperature**** 10) sublimation: is when a solid turns directly into a gas 11) Density: how tightly matter is packed together Types of Matter: Lesson 1

Page 8 Properties of Matter: Main Ideas What is matter? (pg. 342-343) a) Anything that has mass and volume Quick Check (pg. 343) -Critical Thinking: What would be different on Saturn, your mass or your weight? a) Weight, because gravity is different on Saturn and gravity is what affects weight. Mass is not affected by gravity, therefore it does not change. Types of Matter: Lesson 1
Page 9 Properties of Matter: Main Ideas 2) What are the states of matter? (pg. 344-345) a) Liquid, Solid & Gas Quick Check (pg. 344) -What are the properties of each state of matter? - Liquid: Particles move more freely than in a solid, takes the shape of the container it is in and volume doesn’t change, and Particles stay relatively close together. - Solid: Particles are in an organized pattern, their shape is rigid and volume does not change, and they stay in the same place (minimal movement). - Gas: Particles move very rapidly and are widely spread out, the warmer they are the faster they move, they make their own shape when not in a container and take the shape of the container their in. Types of Matter: Lesson 1
Page 10 Properties of Matter: Main Ideas 3) Can the state of matter change? (pg. 346-347) Yes, matter can change when energy is added or removed. Exm: Water in liquid form turns into gas (water vapor) when energy is added and turns into a solid (ice) when energy is taken away. Quick Check (pg. 347) -Main Idea: What are the terms associated with the changes in the state of matter? a) melting point, freezing point & boiling point Types of Matter: Lesson 1
