FULL-FLOATING AXLE CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Definition - axle bearing is on the outside of the axle housing. • No weight is on the axle shaft. • Used on 3/4 ton and larger trucks, and four wheel drive front axles. • If axle breaks wheel will not come off. Page 165 C
SEMI-FLOATING AXLES CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Definition - axle bearing is inside the axle housing. • Weight of vehicle is on the axle shaft. • If the axle breaks the wheel will come off. Page 165 C
BEARING STYLES CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Three styles of RWD solid axle bearings. • Ball Axle Bearing • Straight-Roller Axle Bearings • Tapered-Roller Axle Bearings • Lubricated from differential or packed with wheel bearing grease at time of installation. Page 166-167C
BALL AXLE BEARINGS CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Held in place by metal retainer bolted to the end of the axle housing. • Seal is inside of the axle bearing. Page 166 Figure 7-46
STRAIGHT-ROLLER CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Held in place by a C-Clip in the differential case. • Seal is on the outside of the bearing. • Bearing is lubed from differential.
TAPERED-ROLLER CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Held in place by metal retainer bolted to the end of the axle housing. • Two seals one inside of bearing, one outside.
IRS AXLE SHAFTS CBC AUTOMOTIVE RK • Two types of independent suspension: • Swing Axle • Single Joint • Camber changes with suspension travel. • Independent Rear Suspension • Camber doesnot change with suspension travel. • Two Joints • Axle bearings are similar to FWD. Page 168-169C
