  6. What is elaboration? Prompt: Think of one person you love and explain why you love this person. Answer (No elaboration): I love my mother. She takes care of me when I’m sick. She mends my broken hearts. She gives me good advice. She takes me out to all the places I love. My mother is like my very own personal angel.

  7. Elaboration I love my mother more than anyone in this world. My mother, for instance, takes care of me when I am sick. Last winter, when I got the flu, she would come home during her lunch break and bring me chicken soup from my favorite restaurant, Picadilly. She made sure to give me my medicine every six hours like the doctor prescribed, and she even tucked me in every night…

  8. How can you teach elaboration? • Give students a 5-minute prompt as a bell-ringer activity. • Have them read their answers aloud or to a classmate. • Give them tips on how to elaborate! • Make them elaborate when they are speaking to you!
