Heating and Cooling • British Thermal Unit (BTU) • Heating: The quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 lb. of water 1 degree Fahrenheit - Boilers • Input ~ 14,000 MBTU Output ~ 8,400 MBTU • Cooling Ton: The amount of heat required to melt a ton (2000#) of ice at 32 degree, 288,000 BTU/24 hours - Chillers • Chillers ~ 230 cooling tons each
Alternative Energy SolutionsLong Term • Geothermal – heating and cooling • Solar – electrical • Wind – electrical
Alternative Energy SolutionsShort TermCost Avoidance Program (CAP) • We can conserve energy by turning off electronics when we are not using them. • computers, monitors, printers… • We can turn off lights when we are not using them and reduce number of lights. • Change to florescent or natural lighting. • We can changethe temperature when we are not in the building.
Alternative Energy SolutionsShort TermCost Avoidance Program (CAP) • Small changes make for big savings. • Billing periods from March 2007 – June 2007 • Cost without CAP = $75,280.80 • Actual Cost with CAP = $60,813.07 • Cost Avoidance = $14,467.73 (19.22%) • 3,897 MBTU • Same as 160 cars removed or planting 331 acres of trees
Community Sharing • Team Web Page • Team updates • Presentation • Encouraged peers and teachers to join CAP.
Mission Statement • This lego team has learned a lot about energy since the start. Since this project is all about using different types of energy, we emphasized that point in our work. We also focused on how we, as students, could make a difference.
