Understanding the Range of Choices for Third Person Narrators • Far right: Direct observer - Most limited narrator: S/he can see what is going on, but that’s it. S/he has no power to read into characters’ hearts or minds, no power to interpret thoughts or explain emotions. • Moving towards the left/Middle: Limited narrator • Someone who has been limited in some way. S/he may see what one character is thinking or feeling; or may only know what characters are thinking, not what they are feeling; or may only have knowledge of the past, but no knowledge of the future. There are various ways you can limit this narrator .(See limitations from first-person narrator slide.) • Far left: Omniscient • “God-like.” S/he sees all, knows all: Knows what characters are thinking, what they are feeling, what happened in the past, what will happen in the future. S/he has an unlimited power of observation of the world of the story.
