  1. Gifted and Talented Parent Information Session October 25, 2012

  2. All Children Have Gifts and Talents All students have gifts and talents. School districts usually serve those gifts and talents that are academic in nature. In Conroe I.S.D., we have gifted programs that address learners in need of advanced academic services. We identify those students through a gifted program screening.

  3. Who should be screened for GT? • Students who need advanced level academic services may exhibit the following: • advanced vocabulary • profound questioning • exceptional ability • different perspective

  4. Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment. High school graduates who have participated in services for gifted/talented students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services. STATE GOAL FOR SERVICES FOR GIFTED/TALENTED STUDENTS

  7. Procedures for Nominating Students • Parents may nominate a student • Complete nomination form • Parent survey • Permission to test form • Must be completed and returned by December 20, 2012.

  8. Summer Testing • Location:  Mitchell Intermediate • Dates:  Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11-12, 2013 • Times:  8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. • Nominations open for GT summer screening April 1 and close April 30.

  9. Preparing Your Child For Testing • Keep it simple • Get a good night’s rest • Eat a good breakfast • Bring a jacket or sweater

  10. What tests are used? • Standford Achievement test - assesses the basic curricular objectives in the following areas: • Reading • Math • Science • Social Studies • Environment (2nd grade only)

  11. What tests are used?Continued • Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) • Tasks include detecting likenesses and differences, following directions, classifying, establishing sequence, completing analogies, and solving matrixes. • Verbal • Nonverbal

  12. RESULTS • Parent Letter • Copy of Test Results • Student Profile

  13. Qualifying Scores • Students must have a match between a qualifying score on the OLSAT and the Stanford. • OLSAT Verbal score of 88% or higher paired with a Stanford score of 96% or higher in Reading or Social Studies. • OLSAT Nonverbal score of 88% or higher paired with a Stanford score of 96% or higher in Math or Science.
