There may be no word in the English Bible that quickens the beat of a sinner’s heart more than that of “forgiveness.”
Poet Alexander Pope wrote: “To err is human; to forgive, divine.”

Psa 51:1 “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions”
Psa 51:9 “Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities”
The Greeks used this term of “washing out” the ink from a papyrus sheet so that it might be used for writing again (Moulton 1963, 221).
Acts 22:16 “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord”
“redemption” is used as an equivalent for “forgiveness.” Eph 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace”

In What Sense, Then, Do We Forgive one Another? Our forgiveness of each other has to do more with an attitude than a specific act.
Luke 23:34 “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots”

2 Pet 1:9 “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins”
Implications The idea of forgiveness stirs the soul and has some intriguing implications.
First, “forgiveness” implies an offense. If there is no breach of propriety, no forgiveness is needed.
1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law”
Second, forgiveness implies the personal inability to remedy the violation of law.
Matt 18:27 “Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt”
