Depressant Drugs • Definition: drugs that slow down the nervous system. • Examples: Alcohol, tranquilizers, barbiturates
Effects of Depressant Use • Slows down reaction time • Slows down breathing • Poor memory • Headache • Slurred speech • Nausea and vomiting
Narcotics • Definition: drugs that stop the brain from sensing pain. They also slow down brain activity. • Examples: codeine, morphine, heroin
Effects of Narcotic Use • Drowsiness • Constricted pupils • Nausea and vomiting • Difficulty breathing • Slows down brain activity and heart rate
Hallucinogens • Definition: drugs that change the way a person senses things. People see things that are not real. • Examples: LSD, PCP, Certain kinds of mushrooms, ecstasy
Effects of Hallucinogens • Hallucinations • Anxiety • Withdrawal from people • Flashbacks- can happen hours or years after taking the drug
Cannabis Drugs • Definition: Drugs from the hemp plant known as Cannabis Sativa; active ingredient is Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC • Examples: Marijuana, hashish
Effects of cannabis drugs • Disoriented behavior • Laziness • Poor concentration • Increased appetite • Altered sense of timing • Panic attacks
Inhalants • Definition: household chemicals that people breathe in to get high • Examples: gas fumes, solvents
Effects of inhalants • Dizziness • Lightheaded • Giddiness • Impaired coordination • Headache • Distorts senses • Slurred speech • Nausea • Rapid pulse • Disoriented • Unpredictable Long term effects: damage to brain cells, liver, kidneys, organs, heart rhythm, hearing, vision, muscles
