The Conflict Continues • Western Front- heavy battle zone in northern France • Schlieffen Plan- attacking France first then fighting Russia. • Germany advances to Paris. • Forced to retreat at the First Battle of the Marne. • Schlieffen Plan Fails and Germany has to fight a two – front war.
Stalemate • War in the Trenches • Trench warfare- fighting from trenches • Many deaths, small land gains • Life in trenches is miserable, unsanitary, difficult • New weapons lead to even more deaths • Massive losses on both sides at battle of Verdun and Somme.
