  1. New Teacher Personalized Professional Development Melissa Creacy Alvord Unified School District June, 2013

  2. Overview of Project • The retention of skilled teachers is a concern among educators and school districts.  Providing new teachers with quality teaching techniques and support may diminish teacher attrition and increase student achievement as well as teacher success.  Doug Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that put Students on the Path to College offers teachers many necessary resources to build a repertoire of skills to help lead students to meaningful achievement.

  3. Rationale/Need Addressed • The national teacher turnover rate has risen to 18.6% • Turnover is highest at the neediest of schools • Teachers who reported having worked with mentor teachers had increased job satisfaction • Increasing teacher retention raises test scores and school quality 2012-13 AUSD Participating Teacher Comments: • “I would have quit my job this year if it had not been for BTSA. You listened, observed, encouraged, and truly supported me.” • “I wouldn’t have survived this year at all without you!” • “You are a life saver!” • “ I wanted you to know that I got a job for next year… none of this would have been possible without you!”

Student Comments “It was ok because when I would get it wrong I would see where I messed up” “It was a useful technique because I got to see how to fix my mistakes with others’ problem- solving” “This helped clarify where I was confused” “I think it’s alright. It’s not bad cause if I got it wrong someone would show me why I got it wrong” “It will help me justify my wrong or right answer” "I liked when my teacher used this because everybody had to answer and not just the usual kids" “The screencasts were so helpful. I was even able to watch them at home!” “You are taking a stand for your answer. If you believe you are right, you need to have evidence and explain!” “This helped me not to feel judged in class” “This gave me so much confidence!” “I really liked being able to go back and watch one of the videos whenever I was confused about the writing process.” “I liked knowing when my answer was all right”

  24. Leveraging the five practices of exemplary leadership • How did you apply the five practices of exemplary leadership to implement the project? • Model the Way—Titles are granted, but behavior wins respect • Inspire a Shared Vision—Leadership is a dialogue, not a monologue • Challenge the Process—Step out into the unknown • Enable Others to Act—Unite and ignite • Encourage the Heart—Recognizing contributions

  25. Feedback form

  26. TLAC Feedback • “Very effective! I learned great techniques I now use with my classes.” • “This book is great! The techniques made me start thinking about the transition into Common Core. They held me accountable and allowed me to see the value in the lessons.” • “My students have given me positive feedback in relation to the techniques. They say I motivate them, which makes me feel great. They make my job meaningful.” • “They helped me dig deeper into my teaching.” • “TLAC was a great resource! The strategies I tried were helpful and were easily integrated into lessons flawlessly.” • “I love these techniques!” • “Very effective! I loved implementing ‘Take A Stand’.” • “This book will be valuable in helping me implement CCCSS.” • “I must say this was more beneficial than developing a lesson and analyzing data. We analyze data ALL THE TIME. So learning behavior management was more useful.”

  27. Additional days at the Professional development center • “Very valuable and convenient---gave me time!” • “It was so valuable! I was able to see the entire year to come” • “Beneficial for time management and goal setting.” • “I was able to concentrate and focus entirely on my Inquiry” • “They were extremely valuable and a very efficient use of my time. I was able to focus and get things done without distractions.”

  28. Support provider feedback • “I was so worried about how this was going to work. Now that we’ve met, I feel so much better. I’m excited to try out this technique.” • “I had a lot of great feedback, both positive & constructive to help me throughout the year” • “You are a life saver!” • “You always made yourself available to me---even after hours.” • “I felt supported in every way—you helped me with teaching and in life.” • “Melissa goes above and beyond and goes out of her way to ensure her PTs get all the support they need.” • “You are an awesome leader. You let me express myself when I needed someone just to listen when I wanted to jump off a bridge! Thank you!” • “The level of patience and understanding is unparalleled.” • “My Support Provider really helped me figure everything out, even if my unconventional classroom made it difficult.” • “You were caring and supportive. Thank you for being a great listener.”

  29. Next Steps for the project • Continue providing personalized PD to all interested BTSA teachers in 2013-14 • Continue co-planning, co-teaching, collecting and analyzing data with interested teachers • Create “screen-casts” on a variety of BTSA topics for teachers to watch as necessary • Continue to provide additional days at the Professional Development Center throughout the year to better support teachers through Induction

  30. LPI Growth Areas
