  1. Man Up: Applying the Definition of Authentic Manhood to Real Life

  2. Definition of Manhood • Reject passivity

  3. Where is Adam? 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

  4. Definition of Manhood • Reject passivity • …she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked…. • Accept responsibility • Though Jesus was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped [to cling to, or use to His own advantage],but instead He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Phil. 2:6-9)

  5. Definition of Manhood • Reject passivity • Accept responsibility • Lead courageously • The devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him. (Matt. 4:8-11)

  6. Definition of Manhood • Reject passivity • Accept responsibility • Lead courageously • Invest eternally … look for the greater reward • Jesus said,“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rustdestroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasureis, there your heart will be also.” (Matt. 6:19-21) • …for the joy that was set before him, Jesus endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb. 12:2)

  7. Mission Possible, Part 1 • Teams of 5-6: Brainstorm what passivity looks like • For sphere specified on Chart 1 (10 min.) • Move to Chart 2 … expand on first team’s list (10 min.) • We will focus the brainstorming in five areas of life, including: • Faith, • Family, • Work, • Church, • Community

  8. Mission Possible, Part 2 • Brainstorm what “accept responsibility” looks like • Pick 1 passivity item … list it on fresh chart (left column) • Write what desired outcome looks like (middle column) • Write 1+ steps you can take toward desired outcome • [If time permits, repeat for 2nd and 3rd passivity items]

  10. Example - Work Scenario: My boss is angry because a deliverable he requested from me is late Current State Desired Outcomes Step(s) I can take • Deliverable created by subordinate was low quality • Not enough time to rework it • Desire to blame person to whom work was delegated • Other work is higher priority • Own my decision for how I prioritized the work • Demonstrate a willingness to be teachable if I made the wrong choice Clearly communicate my highest priority work Explain what has been done on requested deliverable without blaming others Directly ask whether I prioritized the work correctly

  11. Example - Family Scenario: I am doing little to purposefully teach my son about growing into manhood Current State Desired Outcomes Step(s) I can take • Unsure what to teach or how to teach it • Lack confidence in my own manhood • Tempted by thought that later is OK • Tempted by thought that others will do it for me • Get engaged as his teacher • Son learns clear vision for godly manhood • Son is motivated to pursue godly manhood • Son feels supported by me and other important men in his life Pray Seek out a clear vision to impart Plan a memorable event to teach it Plan ways to involve other men in showing him encouragement
