  1. Purpose of visibility – to get submissions. Marketing campaign is no good without submissions. Many channels – same core message. Leverage off existing communications. Stick to key messages/message discipline. Sign-off Think about both individuals and groups Be creative and have fun. Introduction January 2010 NZUSA Conference. Workshop by Sam Huggard.Contact: samhuggard@yahoo.co.nz

  2. For your message to be understood it must: Be in a language (encoding) that the receiver will understand (decoding) Go through a channel that will effectively reach the receiver and deliver the desired message Answer the question “What's in it for me?” Tymson & Lazar (2002)

  3. Promotional techniques • Race to 20: in groups come up with as many ideas as you can; then we’ll list on the whiteboard all the various promotional ideas. • What resources do we need in our VSM campaign kit? To action all the ideas we’ve generated, what do we need in our shopping list (stuff like paint, canvas, paper, chalk, food for the BBQ etc). Ordering this stuff soon, before you need it, will save time and night-before panic

  4. Chalking: invest in the larger sticks, keep messages short and simple. Best done in the morning Banners: Design your artwork first, then put it on wall with an OHP. You’ll need fabric and paint, and something to protect the carpet Stickers: simple and clear. Give people a reference, eg website. Lecture speaking: Every hour, on the hour! Online: Consistency, sign off Media: interviews, competitions, promotions Some specifics: Always be considerate to owners/users of any space

  5. Don’t cram the text into the panels of your brochure. Use a reasonable size font (10 points minimum) and include lots of white space. Use lots of headings and subheadings. People skim brochures, headings will determine whether they actually read the text. Include photographs or graphics. One or two great photos make a world of difference, especially on the cover. Use fewer, larger, high-quality photos than lots of small images that are hard to see. - http://www.nonprofitmarketingguide.com Brochure Design Tips

  6. What ways can we seal the deal? Brainstorm in groups ways on generating submissions. Not just relying on our promotions and visibility campaigns – but brainstorming what specific measures we can take to give students the opportunity to make a submission on the bill.
