  2. Kotapanjang Dam • The dam with 114MW in generating capacity, is in the middle of Sumatra Island. • The dam project aimed to provide stable electrical power. • The residents of eight villages in Riau Province and two villages in West Sumatra Province were obliged to be resettled. • The number of displaced persons amounted to 4886 households

  3. Reputation • The resettlement scheme of the Kotapanjang Dam has been criticized by environmentally concerned groups. • The project is believed to have created many problems for resettled families.

  4. Findings • The survey carried out by authors suggests that living conditions of two villages have been significantly improved after resettlement. • The condition of another village has been fairly improved although there are rooms for further improvements. • In yet another village, while many people experienced income decrease and hardship after the resettlement, other indicators of quality of life suggested improvements.

  5. Comparison of present income with that before resettlement

  6. Size of the present house compared with that of before resettlement

  7. Electrification rate

  8. Did anybody explain to you about the resettlement?

  9. Did you or a person representing you negotiate about theresettlement?

  10. Conclusions • The survey suggests that some good practices existed in the resettlement scheme applied. • The good practices will significantly contribute not only for the better living condition of resettlers but also for obtaining public acceptance. • However, under politically biased influence, the good practices may likely be overlooked, and it may lead to delay in improving modalities for resettlement scheme.
