Writing a Grant Proposal • Read the Request For Proposal (RFP) • Form a team of PI and Co-PI(s): • Technical competency • Assessment and evaluation competency • Project management competency • Important!! • Form the team with individuals who are experts, as well as passionate about the proposed project.

  3. Writing a Grant Proposal • Identify who needs to be involved and who will benefit from the project: • Industry partners? • Professional organizations? • State agencies? • Non-government organizations? • Legislature? • Read similar proposals that were funded earlier (identify gaps)

Writing a Grant Proposal • Write a one-page summary (Goals , objectives, intellectual merit, impact - make a case) • Do literature reviews, build a case that is data-driven • Convince the reviewers on three items: • Technical competency • Assessment/evaluation competency • Project management competency • Build partnerships with stakeholders (Get letters of commitment for specific roles in the project , not generic letters of support) • Write, do critique, rewrite, remove redundancy

  5. Writing a Grant Proposal • Develop a clear project delivery plan • Develop a clear assessment & evaluation plan for continuous improvement • For each statement, answer to why? how? so what? • Proposal must address allitemsin the RFP.

  6. Writing a Grant Proposal • BUDGET • How much will the project cost? • Allowable/non-allowable expense? • Watch for over commitment • Project impact proportional to funding request?

  7. Writing a Grant Proposal • NOTE: • Communication with the program officer/director in the early stages of grant proposal writing provides important tips • Share the one-page summary • Make commitment • Have fun • Some good things will come out of this exercise
