You shouldn’t confuse letters and sounds. • A letter is the name of the symbol, • Asound is how that letter sounds inside a word. For example, English letter ‘B’ is pronounced like [bi], but inside a word it sounds like [b]. Note that both of the English letters ‘A’ and ‘U’ can sound like Russian ‘A’ in different situations.
