South Dakota Infrastructure and Roadmap South Dakota VMUG Meeting November 3, 2011
Virtualization Background • Initial Infrastructure • Two Datacenters on campus • Pieced together infrastructure • Agency based projects drove the initial infrastructure • Servers were sized to meet the agencies projects • Two HP C7000 blade chassis • BL 460s and 490s servers • VMware ESXi version 3.5 • Upgraded to vSphere 4.0 ESXi • Existing FC based storage served by HP EVAs • Hosting physical server workloads like Exchange, SQL, and file services • Multiple 1G Ethernet connections • Connections were configured using Ethernet pass-through modules to networks already in place.
Initial Deployment Challenges • Chassis standardization • Needed a more consistent compute platform across the farm • Storage • No array based replication between datacenters • No VAAI support • No FC network in Madison • Network • Cable Management • Lack of network continuity between all ESX hosts
Goals • Immediate goals • Server consolidation • Virtualize First Policy • Keep infrastructure current (covered under a hardware warranty) • Provide high availability for all virtual systems • Solution must be flexible and scalable • Keep it simple • Foundation built to add VDI • Long term goals • Geographic Datacenter Protection • Site Recovery Manager • Reed network / Madison • Datacenter portability and self provisioning services. • vCloud Director
Updated design • New Infrastructure • Multi-site design • Dual socket HP BL460c servers • 6 core Nehalem processors • 96 gigs of ram per host • VMware ESXi version 4.1 • Planning on moving to vSphere 5 • 10G ISCSI storage using HP P4500/P4800 infrastructure • Network RAID 10 across datacenters • Redundant 10G Ethernet connections • Juniper Core with Layer 2 connectivity between Datacenters • Nexus 1000v virtual switch and VLAN tagging
Current statistics • VMware Farm Summary • 42 hosts • 455 Virtual Machines • 5 clusters • 81 Data stores • Workloads being virtualized today • Web and application Servers • File and Print servers • Exchange Servers • SQL Servers
