The portfolio process provides • an opportunity for Newton High School graduates to demonstrate the skills necessary to move successfully from high school to the world of work/education.
Basic Steps To Prepare Your Portfolio • Work on the portfolio all year • Meet all of the deadlines • Collect good work • Select your best work • Do the volunteering • Think about who will write a reference for you • Turn it in on time
Due Dates • Portfolio: • February 3, 2009 • Interviews: • March 9, 10, and 11, 2010
2009-2010 SENIOR EXIT PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS You must include in your portfolio the following: • Résumé • Personal Essay • Transcript • Samples of Academic Accomplishments • Honors and Activities List • Three Letters of Character Reference • Service Learning Personal Section is optional
Aspects Of The Portfolio Left To YOUR Creativity • Be creative but mature • Presentation and content DO matter • You may be creative with the following items: • Cover page • Table of contents • Dividers between sections • Optional personal section (6 page limit)
Résumé The résumé was introduced in speech class. Make sure that it is updated.
Your Essays Will Be • Both will be a Senior English assignment • A clean copy (required for your portfolio) Essay topics are suggested in the handbook.
Personal Essay The paper needs to demonstrate that you have thought about YOU. This will be done in your senior English class
Reflective Essay • Reflect about your chosen academic examples of work chosen. • Your English teacher will assign this.
Academic Accomplishments • Highlight academic strengths. Highlight any skills/knowledge that you have obtained in an academic class at NHS. • Choose 3 samples • May be from any academic area You may not use extra-curricular activities.
Transcript • Include a copy of your transcript or a list of classes in your senior exit portfolio. • See Ms. Shirley in Student Services. • COMPLETE THIS BY JANUARY 14, 2008.
Letter of Authenticity • Complete a "Letter of Authenticity" for each chosen sample. • Get the signature of the teacher as soon as possible.
Display Your Samples • Work samples that do not fit in the portfolio should be photographed. • Actual samples can be carried to the interview.
Digital Portfolio Option • You still need to have a binder. • Collection place until items are digitized. • Seminar teachers will verify you have met the deadlines. • Final product needs to be placed on a disk and placed in the binder. • Seminar teacher needs to make sure it works.
Honors and Activities List • Can be listed in two sections: "honors" and "activities.“ • Organize by school year or by category. • Do not use abbreviations or acronyms. • Include certificates of recognition and achievement, newspaper articles, pictures, letters of intent, scholarship offers from college or university that you have saved. You must limit this to eight pages.
Reference Letters • You must include 3 letters of character reference. • You are responsible for the collection and placement of these letters in your portfolio. • DO NOT have people mail or deliver them to the high school. • A letter of explanation that you may reproduce is included in the handbook.
Service Learning • Use the form in the seminar folder to keep track of service learning. • Service learning (community service) is any voluntary work that is done without payment and is not part of normal household chores. • Ideas are included in the handbook. • Watch the student bulletin for opportunities.
THE INTERVIEW PRESENT YOUR PORTFOLIO TO A REVIEW TEAM MADE UP OF CITIZENS OF THE DISTRICT • The team could be a teacher, a business person, and other citizens. • Before your interview, the team will have read and discussed your portfolio.
When & Where • This year's interviews are March 9, 10, and 11, 2010. • They will be held at the high school. • Sign up for an interview time in the library with Mrs. Limón during January . • CLEAR YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE EVENING YOU CHOOSE!!!
Before the Interview • There will be additional senior meeting on the interview process closer to those March dates.
Did You Pass? • The review team will decide based on your interview and your portfolio.
