Disseminating Environmental Education: How to make a website Matt Maltby
My Project • The focus of my I/S cohort, SP3, is “Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development” • Many students joined thinking that there would be a strong environmental component • However, very little was discussed…
My Project • Create a resource based website that links specifically the issues of Global Citizenship with environmental links. • Hand-picked and reviewed content, to be given to this class and future classes.
Possible Avenues • Popular free website creation pages are largely structured like a blog, but in practice resemble “normal” websites in their final product
Recommended Avenue • Easiest to customize: wordpress.com • Go to wordpress.com and sign up • Note: wordpress.org is for actual websites, which means that you must purchase a domain name from a separate entity. They're basically the same.
Step By Step • Sign up for an account • Click 'create new blog' to set up your website
Step by Step • Can choose your website name
Step By Step • After an email confirmation, click on dashboard, and go to 'appearanceand themes, and you can choose the entire aesthetic basis for your site.
Appearence • Go into dashboard and go to appearanceand themes, and you can choose the entire aesthetic basis for your site.
Appearence • Once you are happy with that, go to 'customize' in 'themes' to change the title/tagline, color scheme, background/header photos
Making Categories • Almost done! Now you need categories. Go to appearancesand menu and create a new menu, importing your categories.
Making Categories • Then create your categories in order to categorize your content. You can even make subcategories!
Benefits and Classroom Applications • Can use a shared account and have class collaborations (similar to the way Google docs functions) • Requires very little time for students to produce an assignment in website form • Cross-curricular • Provides transferable skills for students to use in their future
