  2. Directions • Read all instructions before starting a lab • Do not touch lab equipment until instructed to do so by the teacher. • Never experiment on your own. (ask first) • Tell your teacher immediately if you are hurt.

  3. Dress for Success • Wear goggles when: • Using glassware. • Using sharp objects. • Using chemicals. • Heating objects. • Working with anything that can fly up into the air

  4. Dress for Success • Use an apron when: • Using chemicals. • Heating objects. • Using dyes.

  5. Dress for Success • Wear gloves when: • Handling biological materials • Handling heated objects. • Handling chemicals.

  7. Dress for Success • Tie back long hair • Remove jewelry • Secure or remove loose articles of clothing such as scarves or long, loose sleeves .

Heating and Fire Safety • Keep work area neat and free of extra materials • Never reach over a heat source or flame. • Point objects being heated away from you and others. • Never heat an object in a closed container. • Always wear gloves when touching an object that has been heated. • Do not throw hot substances into the trash. • Know where the fire extinguisher is.

  9. Electrical Safety • Always check cord to be sure it is not frayed • Make sure cord is not where it can be tripped over. • Do not let cord hang over the edge of your work surface.

  10. Electrical Safety • Do not allow cords to come in contact with water. • Do not try to fix electrical problems. • Never unplug an appliance by pulling on the cord.

  11. Chemical Safety • If you spill or get a chemical on your skin or in your eyes tell your teacher immediately. • Never touch, taste or smell chemicals. • If you need to determine odor, waft. • Keep lids on chemicals when not in use. • Do not return unused chemicals to original container.

  12. Chemical Safety • Throw away extra chemicals where your teacher tells you to. • Pour chemicals over the sink or work area. • If you get a chemical in your eye or on your skin wash the area immediately. • Always wash your hands after handling chemicals.

  13. Glassware and Shap Object Safety • If you break glassware dispose of it in the container labled “broken glass disposal” • Do not use any broken or chipped glassware.Show your teacher. • When using knive or scalpels always wear eye protection and cut away from you.

  14. Animal Safety • Never hurt an animal • Always wash hands after handling animals.

  15. Clean Up • Follow teacher instructions for thowing away waste. • Clean work area. • Pick up anything that has fallen on the floor. • Wash your hands.
