What makes a good lesson – Goffs-style (C grade!)? How different are teachers’ and pupils’ perceptions (A/A*)?
Starter (ideas which can be used for pupils) • Blankety Blank with whiteboards. What makes a good lesson. Write down a key word or phrase: • THE KEY TO A GOOD LESSON IS ………BLANK OR BLANKETY BLANK.
Main 1 • Build on the Blankety Blank ideas, by writing points on post its. • Can we categorise these ideas in any way? (n.b. higher order skill – stretching the more able). • Can we rank these groups in order of importance? • How far do you agree with the sentiments on the first page ‘Getting started in the classroom’?
Main 2 • Study the research sheet – ‘What do pupils think makes a good lesson’. • Categorise ideas in the same way as before? • Justify a rank order of these categories (higher order skill) • Are pupil perceptions radically different from our own?
Main 3 - A well-ordered classroom is paramount • Establish routines and ground rules. Never vary. • Know the department and school procedures for dealing with inappropriate behaviour. • Use your own ‘armoury’ of behaviour management strategies. Consider the most effective way to gain attention • Move routine on before the next noise peak occurs. (see booklet – page 2). This emphasises the importance of ‘chunking’.
