Enlistment • Enlisted in the US Army • Was trained as an Army Air Service Reserve pilot • After training he was hired to fly the mail between St. Louis and Chicago
Orteig Prize • Raymond Orteig, a NY hotel owner, offered a $25,000 prize for the first aviator to fly nonstop from NY to Paris • Many pilots had died trying • Lindbergh had a custom plane built
