Today you will be learning about a poem called “Sea Fever” By: John Masefield His mother died giving birth to his sister when Masefield was only six, and he went to live with his aunt. His father died soon after following a mental breakdown. He left to board the HMS Conway, both to train for a life at sea, and to break his addiction to reading. It was not until about the age of 70 that Masefield slowed his pace due to illness. In 1960, Constance died at 93. He had two (Judith, born in 1904, and Lewis, in 1910). He Wrote a poem on his death bed. (1902) was published, the poem "Sea-Fever" ***Students***
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking, I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over. Sea Fever by: John Masefield
Imagery Personification I think that the speaker is describing how ocean is a person. Because he says “tall ship and a star to steer her by”. • this poem is an Imagery type poem because it gives you describing words like.. running tide, white clouds flying, sail’s shaking. • The Speaker is talking about the ocean and when you hear the water hitting the you can imagine the characteristics of the mist hitting the seas faces.
About someone who loves everything about the sea & or beach. About some one who comes to the sea to relax. • The poem is kind of like a story but not quit a story. So it could be considered a Ballad. Literal & Figurative
The Speaker is talking about the ocean and when you hear the water hitting the sand. And you can imagine the characteristics of the mist hitting the seas face. And you can also imagine seeing the sky and how the clouds look. This poem is also Alliteration because they are saying the same lines over and over again, “I must go down to the seas again.” About this poem
Sea Fever is kind of a like a lyric. It has kind of a beat to it. I think this poem is cool because they are giving you rhyming words to make it sound like a beat/ song. Rhyme
After picking this poem I’ve discovered that the boy wants to go back to the sea. And he’s describing the ocean & the different things at the sea. I can relate to this poem because when I go to the sea it is relaxing and is soothing. Wrap Up
