  2. Background • Repeated reports of assaults and violence againstteachers in all educationalsectors; • No support mechanism for victims of assaults; • No agreedrecording and reportingmechanisms; • No clear guidance on assessment of risk.

  3. INTO strategy • Information gatheringfrom DE, ELBs, CCMS and othereducational bodies; • Preparation of report for NorthernConference; • Press Releases to highlight findings • Formal claim to negotiatingmachinery.

  4. Survey and Outcomes • Survey document agreed and circulated; • Sample size agreedat6569 (25%) • Postal surveyconductedbetweenMay and July 2010 • Survey return 35.8% • Findings from the survey relate to: • • Incidents personally experienced by teachers; • • Incidents witnessed by teachers; • • Reporting arrangements; • • Training; and • • Policies and procedures.

  5. Key Findings Key findings include: • 57% of the respondents have personally experienced some type of violence or abuse; • Main types of abuse experienced are use of offensive language, personal comments of an insulting or abusive manner and undermining behaviour; • Main perpetrators of abuse are pupils, parents, principals and fellow teachers; • 50% of respondents have witnessed incidents of violence or abuse in school; • 65% are aware of their schools’ arrangements for reporting and recording incidents of violence and abuse; • 30% have never received training in respect of behaviour management; and • According to 32% of respondents, their staff handbooks do not address the issues of violence/abuse against teaching staff.

MovingFoward Ongoingworkincluded • Working group established; • Agreeddefinition of workplace violence • Any incident in which a personisabused, threatened or assaulted in circumstancesrelating to theirwork • Development of agreedpolicy and guidance: • Policy Statement on Tackling Violence and Abusive Behaviour againstTeachers (TNC 2011/2) issued to all schools and collegess • Agreed guidance leafletissued to all teachers

  7. FurtherWork • Training and Development of Staff Representatives; • Liaisewithstatutoryagenciesregardingreporting incidents; • Resurvey in 2 to 3 years time; and • Ensure support for INTO memberswho are victims of assaults or violence.
