The American People Give Deborah Wiles Hope
Deborah Wiles is not your everyday children’s author, although her numerous awards and nominations may indicate otherwise. A recipient of the PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship in 2004 and the E.B. White Read-Aloud Award in 2005, Wiles often tackles difficult topics and historical events in her books, all in a manner that’s appropriate for younger readers. While exploring events like the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movements, Wiles touches on many themes to tie her stories together, themes like home, family, kinship, and community. Though often dealing with difficult events and moments in time, her books offer readers hope, and often highlight the best humanity has to offer. Wiles was recently interviewed for BookPage shortly after the release of her latest offering; Kent State, available in both print and ebook format. Asked about what gives her hope, here’s what she had to say: “I hope it’s not too corny to say that the American people, as fractured as we appear to be at times, give me hope. At our best—and we are seeing this right now—we know what is most important, for ourselves and for the world. We hold these truths to be self-evident. And we have to be activists for those truths. People out there on the front lines right now, in all walks of life, are heroes. Those staying home and caring for one another are heroes, too. There will be time for other actions. And we will come together, I feel certain.”
