Interpreting and Utilising Outcomes from the NSS Julian Martin Head of Quality Assurance & Enhancement
Format of session • Outline of the way the NSS operates • Information available (publicly and only to UW) • Overview of data – things to consider • How the University manages this information
How the NSS operates • 6th consecutive year of operation • Public site (www.unistats.com) • Threshold criteria >23 students/50% of sample • Directly-funded provision at partners reported in own right • Courses reported upon at ‘best level’ • Level 1: 21 categories • Level 2: c.40 categories • Level 3: c.100 categories • Level 4: 173 categories
Internal Information (1) • Data available internally only • Same results but for >10 response rate: All in Annual Evaluation folder on O:drive
Safety first! • Numbers and percentages • Averages • JACS categories • Trends, comparisons – apples and oranges • Effort versus substance..!
Suggestions, hints and tips • Look for changes over time in your data, at a consistent level • Focus on the things that matter most to students • Consider what you can actually influence (expectation/perception) • Use the comments • Avoid assumptions: triangulate and test evidence directly with students
