Recent Development of Detector Activities for ILCS.Yamada @ CCAST07 Nov.05.2007 • Introduction • Call for LOI & mechanism of selection • IDAG • Benchmarks • Common tasks
Introduction World wide interests in physics to be opened by ILC particularly for, e.g. Higgs/SUSY search & investigation. ILC is expected to allow clear and precise studies on them, which are complementary to those attainable at pp colliders.

The Preface of Sanzo’s Holy Text Collection It is said Nature has shape. The sky covers the world and the ground make things change. The four seasons, although unobservable in shape, let things grow and develop. Watching the sky and the earth, everybody can see this and knows the universe partly. But even for the cleverest it is not easy to recognize the deepest law of the universe, In-Yao. The universe, controlled by In-Yao, can be observed when it shows up in shape. In-Yao, although filling the universe, is hard to recognize since it does not show up itself. Higgs particle ? Dark energy? Okun’s talk at LP77 ILC allows to make a clean scientific approach to such an idea.
Plenty of physics/detector studies Long efforts have been continued on physics at ILC and R&D of detector for it over the world. They were based on free thoughts and approaches. Communication and cooperation realized in the framework of WWS through Workshops, Reviews Outputs were crystallized into 4 detector concepts
GLD LDC SiD 4th-Concept
Reference Design Report by GDE • These concepts are summarized in RDR vol. 3 under the leadership of GDE and with joint effort of WWS. Authors: 1800 Institutions: 325 over the world ( Asia: 85 )
Now GDE moves toward the Engineering Design of ILC, which will be conducted with a well defined organization of GDE. Parameters regarding machine-detector interface need to be fixed through close interaction between machine and detector teams. Detector groups should also be well organized to meet this development. ILCSC invented a new step.
Call for Letter-of-Intents and Mechanism for Selection Through a Call for Letter-of-Intents, Two groups will be selected to proceed to EDR phase. With this procedure it is hoped that detector groups also be organized to meet the requirement of coordinated contact with the accelerator team. This selection is not for construction. Room is left for a new development when ILC is realized.
Creation of Research Director Responsible for the development of experimental programs appointed by and report to ILCSC CHARGES: 1) devise procedure to result in 2 detector designs that are capable of completing detector EDRs, 2) Helping detector groups to secure resources 3) Endorsing major technical decisions by the collaborations 4) Guiding the global detector R&D activities 5) Promoting the ILC project together with ILCSC and GDE. Close cooperationand communication with GDE are essential. Through and after the selection of 2 groups, a good link with the accelerator partner should be maintained toward EDR preparation.
Two Actions to be taken (given in the charge) • Form a management structure to execute these tasks • Appoint International Detector Advisory Group (membership to be approved by ILCSC) • IDAG advises RD on experimental program issues • IDAG makes recommendations on the choice of 2 groups for EDR effort The entire structure is virtual but the process must produce concrete output, i.e. EDR for realistic detectors which are capable to perform desired physics.
Present status Planning works have been started with a transient structure. Close collaboration with WWS, which is representing detector community RD and WWS-co-chairs are working together. Supports are extended by GDE, which are valuable and appreciated. GDE already has experience, working mechanism and tools, from which we benefit and learn. Having a similar/corresponding structure may be effective for good communication.
IDAG • Candidate names are being consulted in each region. Experienced HEP physicists, Detector/soft ware experts, ILC-accelerator experts, Phenomenology theorists (mainly from out of ilc-community) • Members to be approved by ILCSC by end of the year • Hopefully IDAG starts joining WWS meetings from the next Spring, first to become well informed. IDAG scrutinizes the LOIs and recommends two of them, which are complimentary, to go on to the EDR stage. Physics performance, feasibility, cost, safety Certain flexibility will be left compared to usual PAC at the existing accelerators.
LOI groups • LOI groups are known only after they submit LOIs. • Temporary solution: we meet with Concept representatives instead of LOI groups. (E.g. On the benchmarks.) • We wish to identify possible LOI groups soon with some conditions of screening. e.g. enough human resources to participate in common tasks which will be carried across LOI groups, to work on the given benchmarks and to prepare LOIs.
Benchmarks • Crucial reactions studied by WWS physics working group, (Hep-ex/0603010v1). • Certain reactions are listed to be most crucial among them ; e.g. e⁺e⁻ → Z ⁰ H⁰ → l ⁺ l ⁻ X e⁺e⁻ → Z ⁰ H⁰, H⁰ → CC, τ ⁺ τ ⁻,WW* e⁺e⁻ → SUSY pairs like slelectron or stau The performance of the detector for these interactions is to be shown in LOIs under a set of common conditions.
Common tasks • LOI groups are expected to work together on important tasks common to all LOI groups. • Communicate/collaborate with accelerator effort • Organize Workshops to exchange information • Coordinate R&D efforts if needed • Prepare standard tools • Look for a solution to a common challenge (e.g. Push-pull mechanism)
The targets/number of tasks will vary in time. Works have been done by WWS panels for some issues. Transfer/reorganize these activities or collaborate with them Cooperation among LOI groups in the common tasks will be VERY important. Some reorganization of the LOI groups may happen during the preparation or after the selection process. Present groups are still temporal.
Summary • A new step was made by ILSCS to promote and organize the detector activities to meet with the advancement of GDE, which goes into EDR phase. • LOIs have been called for with the due date Oct.1,2008. • Two LOIs will be selected, with a suggestion of IDAG, which will go on tothe EDR stage (but not to real construction). • Besides competition, cooperation is expected across LOI groups for common tasks. Through the cooperation process new ideas/groups may come up when ILC really starts. • A mechanism is being considered which hopefully allow the experimental community to work for such ends.
Common tasks in detail A: Issues related to the accelerator So far treated by MDI group (Experiment side of present MDI) Final focus, radiation shieldings, beam dump, Push-pull mechanism, infrastructure B: Detector issues R&D for tracking devices(Si, gas), CAL, Magnet, PID-devices C: Data handling and analysis issues DAQ, Data reduction, Eve. Reconstruction, Data storage, data distribution D: Physics Performance benchmark, Energy selection, Interaction with other colliders/observations E: Outreach To public, to other physics community rather than HEP, to HEP, to students
