Pre-game Planning • What do we do in case of a tie? • Tie’s a tie • 2 x 10’ Overtime periods • Shootout • 2x10’ Overtimes + Shootout • District wide decision • May be different for VB than for VG • No overtime in regular season JV matches • May have OT or SO for progression tournament
Pre-game Planning • Shootout Preparation • Positions for AR’s pre-determined • 2-man or 3-man • Timing • 3 minutes from end of match to SO start • Determine which goal you will use • Environmental and field considerations • Scoreboard • Proximity to official’s exit route
Shootout Basics • Visiting Team kicks first • No coin toss, no captains meeting required • Alternate shooters • 5 Each team, or insurmountable lead • Tied? Continue until a team leads at rounds end • Any eligible player on roster may shoot • Goalkeeper MAY be a shooter • Not REQUIRED to shoot • May be freely substituted for • Player enters circle - may not be replaced. • No player shoots 2nd time in a round of 10 • Player could shoot at both 10 & 11
Shootout Basics • Shot attempt must be made within 5 sec. • DOES NOT have to be in goal in 5 seconds • Ball continues in play until stopped by GK • OR it’s natural inertia dies • Shooter may not touch ball after: • Ball contacts goalpost, crossbar, or keeper • Whistle to end the attempt if touched again • Keeper leaves line early • Shot attempt halted and re-taken • Ball strikes an official • Shot attempt must be re-taken
Shootout Basics • Fouls - Referee continues to call the fouls • Foul by Goalkeeper – anywhere on field • Shot successful – goal; Missed – PK awarded • Penalty Kick During Shootout • Kick must be taken by fouled shooter • If injured – substitute must be eligible player who has not shot during current round of 10 • Neither injured player nor PK sub may shoot again until next round of 10. • Foul by shooter • Shot good – goal disallowed; Miss – attempt over
Shootout Basics • Misconduct • Normal misconduct rules apply for GK and Kicker • Caution • Must be substituted • GK cautioned on shot attempt cannot defend PK • OR return during HIS team’s next kick • May return for opponent’s next kick • GK may be disqualified (sent off) • Deny Goal by Handling – Outside the PA • NOT for DOGSO

Shootout Mechanics - Referee • Make sure officials / players are ready • Record player numbers • Assure no encroachment by shooter GK • Referee the Shootout – Call the fouls. • Signal goal/no goal (crew coordination) • If dual, • Start watch with whistle and stop with shot. Determine whether shot was made within the time frame and signal referee goal/no goal • KEEP SCORE!
Shootout MechanicsAR @ 35 Yard Line • Control Center Circle (next players in position) • Ensures ball properly placed – 35 yd line • Stay out of the way of shooter. • Assure that shooter is ready-check referee • Watch for referee signal to begin • Lower flag and blow whistle simultaneously while turning back on shot attempt • Raise flag / blow whistle at 5 second mark

Concluding Thoughts • Don’t let tournament final be your first shootout - practice • Conduct of shootouts • one of most criticized procedures • Timing – too long to start and conduct • Knowledge of substitution rules • Do a shootout during scrimmages • New official - expect to be goal line AR • What if it’s a dual?
