  2. Function • Leaves are mainly uses in the process of photosynthesis to enable the plant to gain energy from the sun so it can make food. • The leaves have different layers that protect, collect sunlight or collect carbon dioxide to help with the process.

  4. Think critically…. • The epidermis and cuticle are transparent. Is this an advantage or disadvantage. Explain • What is the advantage of having most of the chloroplasts in cells towards the top of the leaf.

  5. Transpiration • Transpiration is the process of exchanging oxygen for carbon dioxide in the leaves. Plants need carbon dioxide to survive. • The stomata are the doors to the leaves. CO2 enters through the stomata and O2 and water vapor exit thought it. When Guard cells lose water, they relax and close the stomata
