It doesn’t matter how far you move for college, you’ll likely feel at least a little homesick at first. College is the first time most students are permanently away from home — and they’re in a completely new environment. The good news is that there are strategies you can use to settle into your Durham College residence faster.
Realize It’s Normal Feeling as if being homesick is wrong or that you’re weaker than other students is unproductive and untrue. Know that almost everyone is suffering from homesickness, even if they don’t show it. Beating yourself up about how you’re feeling will only make the problem worse.
Make Your Room a Home Bring some comfort items with you to your new home. For instance, you could place a framed photo next to your bed of your best friends or pack a personal possession that always improves your mood. For example, many people take a favorite teddy bear to college — it’s nothing to be ashamed of!
Leave Your Room You may have the urge to shut yourself in your room and chat to friends who want to different colleges or just spend all your time on social media. Whereas this may cheer you up in the moment, it will make it even more difficult get used to your new home.
Plan Activities Staying busy will keep your mind off your homesickness. Find out about events taking place, arrange to meet up with new friends, or just schedule time to relax.
Talk to Someone Homesickness can become too much to deal with alone. This is particularly common if you also have other worries, such as about challenging classes, your part-time job, or financial matters. Use the counselling services offered by your university for support or even turn to a lecturer you trust.
Stay in Touch with Friends and Family Whenever you’re feeling alone, remember that your friends and family members are just a phone call away. Just ensure that you don’t talk too much to these people — you need to make plenty of new friends, too. It may be useful to keep in touch by sending occasional update messages rather than having full conversations.
Choosing the right UOIT housing is key to getting over homesickness. Living on campus can make life even more overwhelming, whereas living in an independent apartment is lonely. For the benefits of both with none of the downsides, choose off-campus student housing like Village Suites Oshawa.
