Obtain Detailed History: ? Force involved in creating puncture ? Cleanliness of penetrating object ? Type of footwear (if puncture on foot) ? Tetanus immunization ? Underlying health problems
1) Inspect wound carefully 2) Determine whether any part of the object is still in the wound 3) Examine site for signs of deep injury: swelling and pain with movement 4) Check for loss of sensory or motor function • Clean the wound and remove any dirt or debris to prevent infection, both bacterial skin infections and tetanus • Puncture wounds typically do not bleed excessively and can remain contaminated
Impaled Object!!!! n -Do NOT remove an object that is impaled in the wound -If the object is large or unstable, hold secure. -Disinfect the area surrounding the object to decrease chances of infection -Do not use alcohol, iodine or mercurial solutions to cleanse wound, these can damage the tissue -Apply antibiotic ointment around wound and seek Emergency Medical Help

How Does it Occur? • Bacteria can infect bone through an open wound, during surgery, or from a bone fracture that has broken the skin • Symptoms include: chills, fever, nausea, malaise, pain, redness, warmth and swelling in the area around the bone • Tenderness and limited ROM can present in the affected area
Osteomyelitis 1) How is osteomyelitis diagnosed? blood tests, bone scan or CAT scan and biopsy 2) How is osteomyelitis treated? Antibiotics given into the veins. May be taken for several weeks to months 3) Be sure to get a tetanus shot after puncture wound if last one was >5 years ago
