(Couples with both spouses serving in the military were not surveyed.) • All spouses (Q44): 14.1% reported they are of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin or ancestry; of those, • 44.0% are Mexican, Mexican American or Chicano • 33.9%are other Hispanic/Spanish • 24.4% are Puerto Rican • 2.3% are Cuban • All spouses (Q45): 82.9% are White, 11.8% are Black or African American, 5.7% are Asian, 3.4% are American Indian or Alaska Native, and 1.4% are Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. • All spouses (Q45): 4.4% of spouses identified themselves as being two or more races, while 79.1% identified themselves as white, 10.2% as Black or African American, 4.2% as Asian, and 0.9% as Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
All spouses (Q44x45): When all spouses of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin are included as Hispanics, 68.5% of spouses are White, 9.4% are Hispanic, 14.1% are Black or African American, and 8.1% are of another race. • All spouses (Q46): 2.6% have not completed high school or a GED, 19.2% have completed high school with a diploma or GED but have no additional formal education, and 78.2% have completed some formal schooling beyond high school. 28.9% have a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education. • All spouses (Q46): Since 2004/5, there has been a decrease in the percentage who have a high school diploma or GED (22.8% in 2004/5, 19.3% in 2010). • All spouses (Q47): Civilian spouses are, on average, 31 years old. 22.2% are under 25 years old, 49.8% are under 30, and 29.6% are 35 or older. • All spouses (Q47): Since 2004/5, the percentage of spouses age 20 to 29 has increased (40.5% in 2004/5, 48.4% in 2010) and the percentage of spouses age 30 to 39 had decreased (40.8% in 2004/5, 34.9% in 2010). • All spouses (Q48): All of the spouses responding to the survey are married. 79.4% are married for the first time, 18.7% are remarried (was divorced or widowed), 0.4% are legally separated, and 1.6% are filing for divorce.
All spouses (Q49): 42.7% have been married for 4 years or less and 70.8% have been married for less than 10 years. • All spouses (Q49): Since 2004/5, there has been an increase in spouses who have been married for 4 years or less (38.1% in 2004/5, 42.7% in 2010) and a decrease in those married for 10 to 19 years (29.0% in 2004/5, 24.0% in 2010). • All spouses (Q50): Over two-thirds rated the quality of their marriage at the time of the survey as very positive or positive in the following areas: • - Faithfulness (83.9%) - Capability to handle conflict (73.9%) • - Mutual support (80.0%) - Communication (73.2%) • - Trust (78.5%) - Spiritual values (66.2%) • All spouses (Q50): Less than one-fifth of spouses rated the quality of their marriage at the time of the survey as negative or very negative in these areas: • - Communication (13.0%) - Mutual support (8.9%) • - Trust (11.8%) - Faithfulness (8.1%) • - Capability to handle conflict (11.8%) - Spiritual values (6.6%)
