Research Question: • In what ways does a young child undergoing vital surgery affect their family psychologically? • I am curious about this topic because I want to be a doctor and would like to know about the mental effects. • I first took interest in this topic after relating part of my major to a real life experience from when my brother had open heart surgery. • The overall goal is to find out how these surgeries impact families mentally, and how it could potentially effect the healing process of the child. • I care because this will provide me with insight on how to deal with my future profession.
Hypotheses: • I think that it causes the family to have an increase of stress and anxiety, which could also lead to the patient being uneasy and scared to undergo the surgery. • How can this increase of stress affect the healing process of the patient? • How can it potentially affect the patients response to medications? • How can knowledge of the procedure prior to the surgery decrease stress? • How does anxiety of the family affect the patient mentally?

Critical Sources: • What has already been done? • I have found research on the fact that a child undergoing surgery does lead to increased anxiety and stress within the family. However I have not found many other mental causes. • What do I wish to contribute? • I want to discover other emotions and effects that these surgeries have on families. I feel that there are many other strains that they experience.
Methods: • I will interview my family members as my primary sources and document how my brothers surgery affected them mentally at the time. • Next, I will survey doctors at random and ask how their patients and families are affected by the child undergoing surgery.
