Outline • Precision temperature monitoring • Humidity monitoring • Temperature safety system (TSS) • Preshower • Software (PVSS) • H4 testbeam 2003 • Bld.867, DCS lab, other activities • Conclusions S. Zelepoukine
Precision temperature monitoring • monitor temperature stability (thermal screen, grid). • precision required : at least 0.01 deg (relative). • sensors: Betatherm Thermistors (NTC) — approx. 500 (EB+EE) • sensor location (in a SM, similar in EE quadrant): • grid — 1 sensor in each module; • thermal screen — 1 sensor in each module; • IN/OUT cooling pipes — 2 sensors per SM. Total: 10 sensors per SM (EE quadrant) • readout (several options are considered): • Keithley multimeter with/without a remote transducer; • ELMB with/without a remote transducer (a backup solution). S. Zelepoukine
Precision temperature monitoring Status — sensor probes: • Exact sensor location is defined (symmetrical in SM). • Sensor probe design is finalized (grid + thermal screen). • Immersion probe for In/Out cooling pipes: OK for SM0 (F.Mossiere); To be defined for SMx. • Sensor installation procedure: • defined for the thermal screen; • to be defined for the grid and In/Out pipes. • Sensor cabling inside SM: • use flat cable (or single twisted pairs); • reconsider patch panel connector (crimped / IDC ?). • Preliminary offers obtained : ~ 10 CHF per sensor (factory pre-calibrated!) Precision temperature monitoring • Status — readout: • ELMB will still be used for the setup in H4 / Bld.867. In the meantime, Keithley [+ T-MUX] options are to be tested. • Transducer (T-MUX) is under development: T-MUX = analog multiplexer + RBFE ASIC (LHC/ACR) • Non rad-hard MUX (Maxim) irradiated at PSI (Dec.02), see CMS Int.note; Results are negative for high rad.doses (>10 years inside ECAL): parameters are not stable enough for required precision. Can still be considered if placed on the balcony and periodically replaced. • Rad-hard MUX (EP/MIC) considered to be used for the second T-MUX version. For this I2C remote connection has to be implemented. • Prototype PCB is produced at IHEP (Andrei Sidorov, IHEP); should now be assembled and tested in the lab — no irradiation testing required. • Keithley tests in the lab (Alison Lister, ETHZ) • long cables (~ 100m) — switching rate, noise effects; • 2-wire / 4-wire sensor connection. S. Zelepoukine
Precision temperature monitoring Keithley measurements: 2-wire connection, long cable Switching_ 2_ point, integration time= 0. 5s 0.01 Ohm Alison Lister, ETHZ S. Zelepoukine
Humidity monitoring • Collaboration with CMS Tracker DCS (A.Tsirou) for sensor study and selection. Also, sensor electronics. • Several types of sensors being tested in the Tracker lab. • New sensors from Hygrometrix at medium price (~ 15 CHF). • Irradiation tests at PSI will start soon (in 1-2 weeks). • Non rad-hard sensors will be used in H4 setup (to obtain experience; provide input for integration). S. Zelepoukine
Temperature Safety System (TSS) TSS (VINCA, Belgrade): • Preparing for SM0, SM1. (to be defined: exact sensor location, probe construction) • The same functionality as at M0’ (interlocks). • RBFE based board — testing is in progress in Belgrade. S. Zelepoukine
Temperature Safety System (TSS) Prototype PCB is under test — RBFE + multiplexer for 8 channels S. Zelepoukine
Preshower DCS for Preshower: • Preshower DCS will not just cover cooling control and temperature monitoring, but also safety monitoring. • NCU Taiwan will take up the DCS for preshower. • Manpower: Apollo Go and Chia-Ming Kuo. • Started to look into using PLC's (Apollo) and soon PVSS (Ming) • Made some cost estimate (Dave Barney) • Study of cabling (Piet Wertelaers) • Will soon write a specification document (Apollo and Dave) S. Zelepoukine
Software • Software developments (Alison Lister, ETHZ): • working on Supervisory System (FSM); • HV application; • Cooling system application; • Plans to implement LV application; • studying methods to access non-PVSS database. • Igor Lobov just has started with PVSS at IHEP, Protvino. S. Zelepoukine

H4 testbeam 2003 • Finishing sensor installation — SM0; testing in Bld.27 (?) • Preparing sensor readout (ELMB + CANbus) and PC in H4 • Integration of PVSS applications • Provide the “PVSS — data acquisition system” interface • Support the Endcap EE0’ tests in H4 — use same setup (?) S. Zelepoukine
Bld.867, DCS lab, other activities • A setup needs to be defined to support DCS related activities in Bld.867 (all sensors must be verified for proper operation after installation). PC/PVSS + ELMB ? • DCS lab is now existing! Bld.892-R-B11 Concentrate all hardware related work there (probe production, testing, readout electronics testing, sensor calibration, etc.). • Sensor database has to be created and maintained. S. Zelepoukine
Conclusions • Sensor installation is close to the final solution (sensor location, probes, cables, connectors) • Temperature sensors/probes— preparing for production. • Humidity sensors should be selected soon — based on irradiation tests at PSI. • Sensor readout still to be defined from several options under consideration and testing (T-MUX, RBFE, Keithley, ELMB). • Will concentrate on readout and CMS integration after the sensor installation work on SM0 is completed. • Software developments — good progress.
