  2. Mythology Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, had been abducted and taken to the underworld by Hades. In revenge her mother ruined the harvests, the earth became infertile and the people were starving. Zeus was forced to issue a decree stating that Persephone should spend only a short time each year in the underworld, and when she was released Demeter permitted Nature to resume its natural course.

  3. What is it? • Virgo is the 6th sign of the zodiac sun passes through this constellation from late September to the end of October. It is the second largest constellation in the sky • Virgo is often represented as a "maiden" . She may have been Isis, the Egyptian protectress of the living and the dead and the principal mother goddess.

  4. Where can you find Virgo • Virgo contains a rich cluster of galaxies which is the nearest major galaxy cluster to us. The Virgo Galaxy Cluster lies about 65 million light years away and contains about 3000 members. Virgo also contains the brightest quasar 3C 273. • To find Virgo look north early evening and find Spica. Spica in Virgo is due north in early June at about 9 pm from New Zealand. The constellation first becomes visible at 9 pm in the evening early in April. It is close to setting at 9 pm early in August.

  5. Symbol • The symbol of Virgo is said to be connected to the Immaculate Conception of the Messiah and marks out the letter "M" or the letters "MV“ for "Maria Virgo" or "Virgin Mary". It is generally assumed to have originated from the star Spica found in the constellation of Virgo and is indicative of female virginity.

  6. Cool Facts  • Virgo, maiden as Astraea, the Roman goddess of justice, but other legends have associated Virgo with successful harvests. • She is pictured as holding an ear of wheat, the star Spica, in her left hand and a palm leaf in her right hand.
