Cover Letter Hints • I am quoting from The Business Writer’s Handbook 7th Edition: • “The application [cover] letter is essentially a sales letter in which you market your skills, abilities, and knowledge. Therefore, your application letter must be persuasive. The successful application letter accomplishes four tasks: (1) it catches the reader’s attention favorably, (2) it explains which particular job interests you and why, (3) it convinces the reader that you are qualified for the job by drawing your reader’s attention to particular elements in your resume’, and (4) it requests an interview” (45). • “1. Indicate how you heard about the opening. • 2. State your objective and mention the specific job title. • 3. Explain why you are interested in the job. • 4. Give examples on your qualifications for the position. • 5. In the final paragraph, request an interview”.
