Formation of oil. The remains of tiny plankton (plants and animals) sink to the seabed and are trapped in the mud. Fish die and sink into the mud as well. The fish and plankton rot in the mud. Without oxygen, tiny drops of oil form.

  2. The remains of tiny plankton (plants and animals) sink to the seabed and are trapped in the mud.

  3. Fish die and sink into the mud as well.

  4. The fish and plankton rot in the mud.

  5. Without oxygen, tiny drops of oil form.

  6. The oil drops join together and start to float up through the water-filled gaps...

  7. The oil drops move up until they are trapped beneath a dome of clay.

  8. Over millions of years a large oil deposit can form, trapped in the gaps between sand grains.

  9. Floating drilling rigs drill down through the seabed and tap into the oil.
