What is hypertension? • Hypertension is the condition in which the pressure of blood in your arteries is dangerously high.
History/Origin • Descriptions of the disease first came from Thomas Young in 1808
Signs/Symptoms • Usually no symptoms present, the disease can cause other diseases such as stroke and heart attack. Sometimes there are headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath and blurred vision. • Ask your doctor how long the symptoms should occur before you should be concerned.
Factors • Genetics play a part • Environmental and lifestyle: smoking, obesity, and if a large portion of your diet consists of sodium.
Treatment/Managing the problem For treatment, you can; • Exercise regularly • Taking frequent medication • Recommended weight loss • Get support
Treatment/Management (continued) • Massages to relieve stress • Change in lifestyle Impact on the individual; • Increases risk of more severe diseases • 8 in every 100,000 people die from hypertension
