October 30, 2009 Unit TwoLinear Measurement
By the end of this unit, students will be able to • Estimate and measure length in standard and metric units • Convert between inches feet and yards and compare various lengths • Use length to solve problems • Estimate and count to find perimeter and area of figures and real world objects Unit Objectives
Understand why area is measured in square units • Solve area and perimeter problems using different strategies • Understand how two different shapes can have the same area or the same perimeter. • Understand the difference between area and perimeter Unit Objectives
Use standard units to measure objects Use perimeter and area to solve problems Develop and use formulas to solve problems involving perimeters and areas of rectangles, including squares Measure to the nearest ¼ inch and 1/8 inch Accelerated objectives
Estimated measurements can sometimes be better used to solve a problem than exact measurements Units of measurement are related Different strategies can be used to find the perimeter of a shape Important concepts in this unit:
Vocabulary Centimeter (cm.) Inch (in.) Foot (ft.)Customary units used Yard (yd.)to measure length and Kilometer (km.) distance Mile (mi.) Meter (m.)
Vocabulary Ounce (oz.), Pound (lb.) – customary units used to measure weight Convert- to change something into another form. example: 12 in = 1 ft
Vocabulary Perimeter- the distance around a plane figure Area- number of square units needed to cover a flat surface Square unit- number of square unites needed to cover a flat surface
Measurement conversion strategies • Make a Table • Draw a Diagram
Conservation 1 2 3 4
Perimeter Area • Perimeter surrounds the outside of a figure or shape. It is a one dimensional measurement expressed in single units. • Length +length+width+width • Area measures the amount of surface covered. • It is a two dimensional measurement expressed in cubic units • Length x width
Determining perimeter Strategies • 1,2,3 strategy • Example: The perimeter of a figure is 16 units. Draw 3 rectangles with the same perimeter. • Figure 1 • Figure 2 • Figure 3
Literature Connections • Happy Birthday, Sam by Pat Hutchins • Something Absolutely Enormous by Margaret Wild • The Hilton Hen House by Jo Hinchcliffe • Joseph's Overcoat by Simms Taback • Inch By Inch by Leo Lionni • The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
