Creating ENG Pathway Creating the Engineers of the Future: Who are we targeting? Are we really targeting HSI and MSI? How to engage them? Analysis of “A System Dynamics Model” to understand the interaction of population dynamics on the Engineering Pipeline via Projected increase in population of URM vs. Majority Retirees projection & impact on workforce. Impact of URM attrition on ENG degrees conferred. Please read the Presidential Commitments from “Engage to Excel: Producing One Million College Graduates with Degrees in STEM”. How the “BP” Office is developing the “Engineers of the Future”
BRIGE and GRDS Programs Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grants in Engineering (BRIGE): Research opportunities for early career investigators, $175K for 2 years. Broadening Participation plan is required. Graduate Research Diversity Supplement (GRDS): Broaden the participation of underrepresented students in engineering Ph.D. programs through supplements to ENG current research grants. Submitted by PI of an existing ENG award. Collaborative ENG Divisions funding ~$2 M, 41k/fellow/year
BRIGE Awards: Carnegie Classification, n2008-2011=131 • Target HSI and MSI to bring more URM students & Faculty Data: Carnegie Foundation
BP Plan Impact: Increase in the participation of underrepresented students in Engineering, FY09-FY2010
GRDS Awards Percentage of Underrepresented* Groups, n2009-2011=126 *Underrepresented Groups denote women, ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, and veterans.

What do we need to do differently? • EngageEveryone • Embrace Broadening Participation aspects within department. • Provide BP workshops to ENG departments at Colleges & Universities. • Increase participation of minority faculty members in your departments: Targeted Recruitment and Retention. • More Innovative Ideas: • Explore Family Friendly Opportunities. • Changing the environment by performing target recruitment and retention. • Assist with Curriculum Development and peer mentoring for Community Colleges. • Target HSI and MSI to bring more URM students & Faculty. • Collaborate, integrate, and prioritize!
