Capstone Project Audience • This is a unit lesson block to address high school Juniors and Seniors studying the Bill of Rights. • The Focus for this unit is Problem Based Learning with SPECIFICS on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 10th amendments. • The website is used to guide, enhance, and facilitate PBL focusing on the Bill of Rights.
PBL; what is it? • How do we get students to think? • Problem based learning (PBL) is an instructional method that challenges students to "learn to learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world problems. These problems are used to engage students' curiosity and initiate learning the subject matter. PBL prepares students to think critically and analytically, and to find and use appropriate learning resources. • One major resource for this lesson block is the website I created for this project. PowerPoint is used to enhance knowledge for each lesson, show examples of case law, and facilitate discussions.
How this works • Students will be in small groups to “solve” various aspects of the amendments. • Each small group will be assigned a specific task related to the amendment being studied. • 1st amendment example; group one would be assigned free speech. Group two would be assigned freedom of religion. Each group will be required to find specific case law that relates to their segment of the amendment by using the website. • Using their new found knowledge, students are to create a historical fiction case based factual scenario. Each group presents their scenario case to the class for discussion. • Final five paragraph individual essay.
My Goals For The Website • Easy to use • Fun to use • Attractive and exciting • Variety of resources and organized links • Useful information • Case law examples • Promote PBL and the Bill of Rights
The Goals For Students • To understand how the law and the Bill of Rights apply to daily life. • To apply the knowledge learned from the lessons in real life situations.
Key Guiding Questions • 1. How would the creation of real life problem solving examples/scenarios with specific emphasis on the Bill of Rights improve retention? • 2. Would creating independent scenarios through problem based learning about history help interest students in the topic of discussion?
What I learned and my plans • How to make a web site • Curriculum implementation throughout my department • District wide usage and beyond for the web site.
