In 25 years since introduction of Section 28, it has sometimes felt that progress on LGB equality has been an unstoppable march forward. • We now have equal marriage, equal age of consent, be able to serve in the military and not fear being sacked simply because of sexuality.
BUT, despite this progress… • Homophobic and biphobic hate crimes and incidents remain rife in our villages, towns and cities. • Homophobia remains rife in our schools
Prejudice can manifest: • At school • At home • At work
At School More than half (55 per cent) of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct homophobic bullying Three in five gay pupils who experience homophobic bullying say that teachers who witness the bullying never intervene www.stonewall.org.uk/schoolreport
At home One in sixLGB people have experienced a hate crime or incident in the last three years (330,000 per year) 75% didn’t report it to the police www.stonewall.org.uk/hatecrime
At Work In the last five years 2.4m people of working age have witnessed verbal homophobic bullying at work. A further 800,000 people of working age have witnessed physical homophobic bullying at work. www.stonewall.org.uk/gayinbritain
“Homophobia isn't just a problem for gay employees, it's a problem for business” Lord Browne, The Glass Closet
How homophobia is changing Whilst public attitudes to same-sex marriage and same-sex parents are changing, there is still much to do to change hearts and minds in society
NoBystanders • To create a world where everyone feels able to be themselves will require all of us to stand up to abuse and challenge prejudice. We can’t be bystanders when our friends, neighbours, colleagues and families are made to feel less worthy and their lives less valid www.nobystanders.org.uk
