  2. The BCSA is: • Vaughn Balzer - President & Board Chair • Corby Deglow - Secretary & Board Member • Chris Trotchie - Board Member • Doug Glavich - Board Member • Kevin Solomon - Board Member

  3. The BCSA • is committed to the development of skateboarding facilities throughout Benton County where members of the skateboarding community and general public feel safe and welcome.

  4. The BCSA would like to: • Partner with the City of Corvallis via the Parks, Open Spaces and Recreation Board • Our goal is to expand and improve the Eric Scott McKinley Skateboarding Facility (ESM Skatepark) • We believe that this endeavor will have positive lasting benefits for our community

  5. Why? • To provide advanced skating terrain for skateboarders of all ages. • To relieve crowding thereby creating a safer skateboarding facility for all. • To benefit the Corvallis and Benton County community.

  6. The ESM Skatepark • was specifically designed for beginning and intermediate skateboarders. It has no advanced terrain! • Local skateboarders of all ages deserve to have a skatepark that allows them to advance their skills and grow as individuals.

  7. A crowded skatepark is unsafe! • Based on a national survey* 16% of the total US population between 5 and 24 years of age rides a skateboard. • There are ~20,387 residents Corvallis between 5 and 24. ~3260 Skateboarders in Corvallis! • There are ~28,984 residents Benton Co. between 5 and 24. ~4630 Skateboards in Benton County! • There are only 2 skateparks in Benton County neither of which has any advanced terrain. * Data from “Public Skatepark Development Guide”

  8. A crowded skatepark is unsafe! • Expanding the ESM Skatepark by adding advanced skateboarding terrain will inherently lead to de facto segregation of skateboarders by ability. This will make the skatepark saferfor all by relieving crowding (especially on sunny weekend and summer afternoons).

  9. A bigger and safer skatepark • will benefit the community as whole by bringing more people (skateboarders and their families) into downtown Corvallis. • Local youth will be able to focus more of their energy into improving their skateboarding abilities allowing them to grow as individuals.

  10. Our Vision for the ESM Skatepark: • A three phase program of expansion and improvements! • A skatepark that has something for everyone! • A skatepark that will bring skateboarders into our community!

  11. Phase 1: • A “swimming pool” style vertical bowl.

  12. Phase 2 • Additional “street” terrain and improvements to the existing facility. • Lighting, skateable “bleachers”, “permanent” picnic benches with BBQ areas, artistic “permanent” signage. • Etc…

We are here tonight to ask the Parks, Natural Areas and Recreation Board (Board) to consider a partnering proposal • In this partnering relationship the Board would make an initial commitment toward expanding and improving the existing skateboarding facility. • Ideally this commitment would include setting aside some space adjacent to or in close proximity to the existing ESM Skatepark.

Partnering Proposal • This partnering relationship would be very similar to the partnering relationship between the Board and the Corvallis (Avery) Rose Society. • A commitment from the board to expand and improve the ESM Skatepark will enhance the BCSA’s ability to raise funds for the initial planning process to begin. • Planning considerations, community input and funding constraints will help to define the full design foot print proposed for each phase of the this plan.

  18. Partnering Proposal • In this partnership the BCSA’s primary goal is to advocate for and raise funds for ALL aspects of adding additional “skateable” terrain. • The BCSA is committed to working with all levels of the community to ensure that expanding and improving our local skatepark will have enduring beneficial affects on the community as a whole.
