What is a CV? • A document which states your experience, skills, qualities, training & qualifications • A positive statement about yourself • A document to get you to the interview stage of the recruitment process • Provides an employer with clear information about you.
When can a CV be used • Replying to advertised vacancies • For speculative applications to potential employers • To assist with the completion of application forms • As a tool for preparing for interviews • A prompt for use during a telephone interview
What to Include in a CV • Contact details • Personal profile • Key skills • Experience – work history, volunteer work, other relevant experience • Education, qualifications and training • References
What Not to Include • Date of Birth • Marital Status • Nationality • Passport number • NI number • Hobbies & Interests – unless relevant
Tips for Completing your CV • Use good quality white paper • Should be neat, clear and typed – maximum 2 pages • Check spelling and grammar • Summarise skills, qualities and achievements relevant to the specific job you are applying for – make up a different CV for each job
Tips for Completing your CV • Try to match your skills & experience to what is asked for in the job description • Research the requirements for the job • Do not lie – lying is fraud • Keep a reference copy • No stories – short bullet pointed facts – easy to read
C.V. contents • Name & Contact Details • Personal Profile - statement of your experience & knowledge relevant to job • Key Skills- personal, professional • Employment History – what, where, when : information on work activities/ responsibilities • Education – school, college, university, work based qualifications • Other Information – e.g. driving licence, awards • References – statement that they are available
