The Definition of “Leadership”… • Leadership is Influence. • Including: the ability to obtain followers. • Could be used for good or evil • Not simply a “position” or “title” with status; it is a “service” • Two Questions to think about • What’s the strongest influence on me? • In terms of my ability to influence others, what is the best focus I have?
Insights about “Influence” • Everyone influences someone. • We are both influencing and being influenced by others throughout life. (Hats) • What kind of an influencer will you be?
Leadership: are you “Born with it”? Truly “born” leaders will emerge Natural characteristics must be developed Were any great men born in your village? A wise person replies, “Nope, only babies.”
What will I need to Succeed? • Traits • Raw Materials of Leadership (P.O.L.C.) • Theories, Roles, Styles, etc. • Desire • Commitment not to live a “little life” • Passionate, relentless dedication, ability to rally others • Attitude • We play the one string we have in life… • Life is 10% what happens to me & 90% how I react to it.

The 5 Levels of Leadership • Level 1: Position • People follow because they have to • Entry level of Leadership • Influence comes only from title • Follower’s are not confident • Often gained by appointment
The 5 Levels of Leadership • Level 2: Permission • People follow because they want to • Followers will go beyond your stated authority • Time, energy, & focus on individuals’ needs and desires (Ex. Ford Model T’s Color) • Deal wisely with difficult people
The 5 Levels of Leadership • Level 3: Production • People follow b/c of what you have done for the organization • Followers gather for a purpose with goals • Problems are fixed easily due to momentum • “Success” is sensed by most people at this level • Results-oriented (Ex. Traveling Salesman)
The 5 Levels of Leadership • Level 4: People Development • People follow because of what you have done for them • Followers consistently demonstrate superior performances • Ability to empower others (loyalty) • Give key followers growth opportunities
The 5 Levels of Leadership • Level 5: Personhood • People follow because of who you are and what you represent (Respect!) • Few people ever make it to this level • Followers are loyal & sacrificial (Ex. Ghandi, JC, etc.)
Which “Levels of Leadership” are the following associated most with? People Don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. A Leader is not great because of his/her power, but rather because of his/her ability to empower others.
What are The 5 Levels of Leadership? • Level 1: Position • Being a “boss” v. “leader” • Level 2: Permission • Not a Pecking Order, but relationship building • Level 3: Production • Ignorant, but successful, salesmen • Level 4: People Development • Walk slowly thru the crowd & develop key leaders • Level 5: Personhood • Ultimate Respect
