Nokia's history dates back to 1865, when the Finnish-Swedish mining engineer Fredrik Idestam founded a pulp mill near Tampere, Finland (then part of the Russian Empire). A second pulp mill opened in 1868 near the neighboring town of Nokia, offering the best hydropower resources. In 1871, Idestam, together with his friend Leo Mechelin, founded a joint company from him and named it Nokia Ab (in Swedish, Nokia Company - English equivalent), in honor of the place where the second pulp mill was located.
