Chapter 5. Vertebrates. Vertebrates are animals with an endoskeleton Vertebrates have muscle, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems, and sensory organs. Fish. Have gills that pull oxygen out of water Have swim bladder Have sensory organs (lateral line). Jawless Fish.

  2. Vertebrates • Vertebrates are animals with an endoskeleton • Vertebrates have muscle, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems, and sensory organs

  3. Fish • Have gills that pull oxygen out of water • Have swim bladder • Have sensory organs (lateral line)

  4. Jawless Fish • Slender tube-like shape • No jaws but have teeth • Digestive system with no stomach

  5. Cartilaginous Fish • Skeleton made of cartilage • Includes sharks • Include rays and skates

  6. Bony Fish • Skeleton made of hard bone • Most have scales • Have jaws and teeth and several pairs of fins

  7. Amphibians • Live some of life in water and some on land • Lay eggs in water • Obtain oxygen through smooth, moist skin (some have lungs)

  8. Reptiles • Have tough dry skin covered with scales • Have lungs and sensory organs adapted for land • Lay eggs with shells on land

  9. Birds • Have feathers and hollow bones for flying • Have pair of scaly legs and a pair of wings and a beak • Hard shelled eggs need to be kept at a constant temperature

  10. Mammals • Have hair during part of its life • Most have specialized teeth • Produce milk to feed young

  11. Definitions Ectotherm – body temperatures change with environmental conditions (cold blooded) Endotherm – maintains constant body temperature warm blooded Gestation – time a mammal is developing in mother
