Think and Write • Nick reflects on page 98 that “Possibly it had occurred to [Gatsby] that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever.” • What “light” is Nick talking about? • What was the “significance” of the light? • Why had the significance of the light “vanished forever”?

Figurative Language in Ch. 5 With your group: • Look at the passages on the worksheet • Identify how the passages are used in context (find them in the book) • Determine what type of figurative language it is (simile, metaphor, personification, allusion, hyperbole) OR if it is imagery, which of the 5 senses is appealed to (sight, smell, touch, sound, and/or taste) OR perhaps there is a combination. Highlight/underline fig. lang. or image • Analyze: What is the author’s point about the image being created? Why would the author create such detail at this point?
