The boy told Jiichan that he likes his stories more than the television. As he remembered the old days, a large crowd of people had gathered before him. They remembered him and asked him to tell them the old stories. He took a deep bow, and got so happy. The Kamishibai man went home and told his wife that he would go again to the city. She made him more candies to take with him. In Japan, in a small house on a hillside, there lived an old man and his wife. They called each other ‘’Jiichan’’ and ‘’Baachan’’. They had no children. One day, Jiichan missed going on his rounds. Baachan made him some candies to take with him. The next day he rode his bicycle down the hillside. When he arrived the city, he thought he took a wrong turn . Jiichan felt as he was in another country. There were many cars and tall buildings. Cars and trucks horns blasted at him 6 1
Jiichan remembered when he went to different places in the city. Places where he used to go and tell the kids stories, but the kids didn’t come to him. He went on clacking his clappers. A little girl looked from a window and asked him to be quite. She was watching television. ‘’ How could the world change so quickly? Was I a bad teller?’’. Jiichan remembered his last day as a Kamishibai man when the boy who never had money came to him. He moved to a vacant lot and waited. He didn’t remember such rude drivers. He saw many new shops and restaurants. He remembered long ago when he used to open his box and get the story cards out. Then he took out two wooden blocks, and holding one in each hand. He hit them together. 5 2
’Come gather around me, little ones, your Kamishibai man is here again.’’ he called. ‘Come get your candies and listen to my stories’’. He remembered the kids running to him holding coins in their hands. He remembered the poor boy who had no money and never took candies from him. Jiichan remembered when he was going home, and saw a crowd of people looking at something called television. It showed moving pictures, they were blurryand had no colors at all. Most of the people had televisions in their homes. No more boys or girls came to listen to his stories. 4 3
